Default Recommended to go Ranger?

Hi there,

I just bought the Guild Wars Trilogy and Eye of the North to try and get familiar with the story before Guild Wars 2.

I also wanted to get some achievements for the Hall of Monuments. I read that you should create a Ranger to get a pet achievement so would it be recommended to go Ranger?

Thank you very much!

No, not really. You can always change your secondary profession later in game, into /R as well, so you can capture the pets. So you can start playing as a mesmer, take the monk or necromancer as the secondary, and after finishing a certain mission/quest (campaign-dependant, in general so-called 'ascension'), you can freely change your secondary profession, so you can be Me/R for a while, just to cap your pets for HoM.

In short - just pick the class you think is the most fun after you saw the skillset and read about it on the wiki - http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Main_Page

Ah thanks a lot!

Is there a better expansion to create your character in?

I would start out in Nightfall since you get early access to heroes, which make you're life more comfortable.

It doesn't matter in which expansion you create your character in. Since you can get everywhere the moment you get of start-island (proph it's the outpost lion arch) how-ever most people would say factions (starterquest give a lot of experience) or nightfall (direct access to heroes) are the best. I would agree, my fav is factions simply since I think henchman lower level are as good as heroes at a lower level and without the profs I want in a hero team.

You know if it's your first character, despite fast levelling in Factions or easy access to heroes from Nightfall, it still might be best to start in Prophecies. Not just for the correct chronology, but because it's the best campaign at teaching you the game mechanics but also because it's got alot more skill quests than the other campaigns.

And skill quests will give you a way to get more skills without spending money, skills which you later then can use on your heroes when you get them or to increase your own skill options, as money is something that you won't yet have if it's your first character...and to get more than the basic amount of skills will cost you money in Factions or Nightfall.

Nightfall does have hero skill trainers that can unlock skills for you for free too, but hero skill points do come in a more limited supply.

Thank you very much guys.

I just have a few more questions.

1.) I bought and downloaded the Trilogy but I had a problem purchasing EotN. I am waiting for a reply to my support ticket but in the mean time if I begin the game, without EotN; will any progress count towards Hall of Monuments?

2.) I was thinking of starting in Prophecies as KotCR suggested. Do you think I will have time to gt the 30/50 points before GW2?

3.) As a newbie to the game I was going to use the wiki to help me with the quests. Although, I noticed on some HoM guides that you should always have a 'Storybook,' so it will fill in as you level, and another item (I forgot the name) that you should have at least 1 of to get the protector title. I am very confused and have no idea what these things are.

While I'm leveling are there any things I should bring with me so I can work toward the 30 points while I am leveling?

4.) Are there any beginner frendly leveling guides you might recommend? The step-by-step guides I find really helpful but I can't find any.

Thanks!

1. Yes, any progress you do will count towards your HoM. You just bring your titles and/or achievements to the HoM once you get EotN.

2. Getting 30/50 points can be done super fast, and there are several guides on how to do so. I would recommend however that you just play and enjoy the game. Without even trying you can rack up 20 points just from regular playing. The last 10 points some work, but not much once you already know what you're doing.

3. The books are obtainable from NPCs in the major cities of each campaign. Information on them can be found here: http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Storybook

4. Leveling in GW isn't as much of a grind as other games. You will reach max level (20) very easily. This isn't to say that you'll be blowing through the game though, as pretty much 95% of the game is designed around the idea that you'll be max level when you do it. Think of the entire road to 20 as a tutorial. The real game doesn't even start until you hit max level.

I'm pretty new, running my first two Characters, a W/M and a Ranger/Elementalist with a Focus on fire; For what my opinions worth, she's great fun, she not nearly as Squishy as Prime Elem or Monk, and has devastating ranged fire power. You can user her bow like a Boxer uses his jab to set range then unload the fire spells; or my fav against fairly big mobs - Use an Axe/Artifact combo charge a big fighter, rush into the kitchen and as soon as the Axe Lands unleash Lava Font; followed by fire storm, the results are spectacular. I dont know about Ranger/Other but Ranger/Elm is definitely worth a test drive. IMHO.

You can start working on your titles now and enter them later into the HoM once you able to merge EotN into your account. No progress will be lost.

But depending on what kind of experience you want out of the game, you may want to get EotN as soon as possible for the PvE skills and Heroes that it can bring.

Getting to 30/50 points on HoM before GW2 comes out is possible. There are already several guides/posts on the Guru forums on how to do this. There is a more formal/summery guide of the steps involved on the wiki here.

The "story books" are somewhat optional in terms of getting titles into your HoM. Story books merely earn you experience/points/gold, a way of tracking your progress in various parts of the game, but really not required for game play.

Levelling your char(s) shouldn't be a problem, though if you want an easier, quicker time in getting through the game you will want to get weapons and armour with max rating. The wiki also has tips and guides on playing your profession. And unless it is the Legendary Defender of Ascalon title, you will likely already have levelled your char long before you even get started on your 30 points. But if you are looking for a levelling guide the closest thing could be any of the Survivor guides out there.

If your primary concern/goal in the game is getting 30/50 on the HoM you may want to spend real money on the various skill packs via the Online Store. This will come in handy when equipping your heroes' skill-bars without the need to run around purchasing or skill-capping the skills for them.

Heroes???you may find yourself spending about 80% of your in-game time running around with just your heroes. Most veteran players have a favourite ???team build??? that they play and so will spec their heroes skillbars/weapons/runes towards that team build. Having a ???perfect??? hero team build will allow you to easily breeze through the Cartographer, Vanquisher, Protector, and Guardian titles.

Thanks a lot everyone. The links are a big help.

I got to level 9 in Nightfall and, probably because of my poor armor, the enemies attack me often.

I am** confused about the basic things like how often to upgrade armor/weapons, what NPC to buy from, what to give to my heroes, etc.

-I wasn't sure if I should buy off the [Armor] NPC because they cost bolt of cloth which I think I need to save up? Maybe I should buy from the collectors?

-I also haven't run into the storybook yet. Will I have to go and get it from somewhere?

Is there a link that might help with these basic things?

(Forgive me if the answers are obvious - I am going to have a thorough look through all the links so feel free to not answer the ones that are already answered in the links davehall suggested.)

It might be because you position yourself in a bad way, if you back up a little after initial aggro they should switch to someone else. The AI also targets the one with the least amount of health. I suggest you get a necro with minions and death nova on your team as well as a spiritspammer and a couple of mesmers would also be useful.

Good, because it's more or less as often as possible, non max stuff is really cheap and max stuff is cheap as well, it's the good looking armor and weapons that costs much.

As I said, it really isn't much of a cost for early armor. But if you recon you need more bolts of cloths then try to salvage items which turns into that (the wiki have a list, common sense is an excelent way of figuring out which items contains it as well (it's the cloths ))

You already have the link to the wiki and pvx, so you should be good to go

Thanks Kendil!

So far am level 15 and just completed to Consulate Docks misson. I haven't done the quest to go to EotN yet.

I just bought the +30 armor.

I am not quite sure what to sell or to sell to the merchant or a player. My bank is filling up with a lot of blue and purple items.

Also, should I only be salvaging items that will give cloth, and vendor the ones that don't? How about blue/purple items that can be salvaged?

Thanks.

You can merch (sell to merchant) all weapons that you or your heroes don't need unless they are golden. In that case you can sell them unidentified to players for the going price (650g ea?) (that's because they are working on their wisdom title track).
If you identify any item (even white) they will increase in value when sold to a merchant. So you want to do that always before merching.
Some runes and insignias are worth more when sold to a trader instead (those that cost more than 100g @ the trader), so salvage them and sell to the trader.
Selling upgrades to players takes a very long time, so I wouldn't recomend it, just salvage stuff that you need.

As for salvageing for materials, salvage after need. If you know that you'll need many iron ingots then salvage swords and other stuff. If you don't need it you can salvage just in case or simply id it and merch it.

Really merch anything if you don't know it is more valuable to a trader or if you need it. Salvage after need. Brows through the market in kamadan once in a while and you'll get a feeling of what's valuable. Don't be afraid to ask!

Thanks Kendil.

So far I've found 3 gold items. Where could I look for the going price?

Kamadan, (Kamadan, Kewel of Istan) it's the largest trading city and it's also the biggest city in NF, and like the first except for the first little outpost.

Anyways, look for people typing wtb/wts unid golds (and then usually a price). Normally you sell/buy them in bulks of 7 (max items to trade). So it could look something like this: wtb unid golds 4.5k/7
